It’s a week into your new job. You’ve settled in fairly well, and even managed to speak to Melissa without blushing. Everyone seems really nice, as long as you don’t ask any questions about the sub-basement levels.
There must be a reason why everyone acts so unusual when the topic’s brought up, you think to yourself. But you’re not sure if it’s worth pushing.
Before you can lose yourself in thought, an older man comes up to you.
You’ve not met him yet, but his reputation precedes him. His name is Julius, and, according to the other staff on your floor, he’s crazy. He certainly appears that way to you, with his 1980’s glasses, greasy hair and unkempt beard.
“It’s Greg, right?” he says, offering you his sweat-dripped hand.
You hesitantly shake it.
“Yeah. Am I right in thinking you’re Julius?”
“The one and the same. Anyway, I couldn’t help but notice you’ve been asking around about the sub-basement levels.”
You try to offhandedly deny it, but Julius’ piercing gaze stops you.
“Look, there’s more to this place than meets the eye.” he says, while looking around shiftily.
Julius proceeds to start explaining elaborate conspiracy theories. According to him, the Department doesn’t recruit people with ESP, but instead kidnaps them for experimentation and to use their powers to harness a new kind of energy.
It all sounds like nonsense to you - the sort of thing you’d read about in a mystery thriller. You smile and nod, pretending to listen.
“Oh, and one more thing.” he says, moving his face closer to yours. “I know where your sister is.”
Your blood runs cold. Rosie, your older sister, has been missing for over three months now. Reflexively, you grab Julius by the collar.
“What?!” you shout, before realising where you are and going into a hushed whisper. “Where is she?”
“She’s somewhere in the sub-basement levels. Most missing people nowadays tend to be ESPers who the Government have kidnapped.”
Julius discreetly hands you a document. It’s a classified letter, from some on the eleventh floor to an employee from the ninth floor. The letter implies that the employee in question is being assigned to a kidnapping mission, but is deliberately vague in wording.
“Where the hell did you get this?” you ask.
However, Julius has already walked away, so your question goes unanswered.
You’re still unsure if you believe Julius, but you decide to investigate his claims, in the hope that you’ll find Rosie.
