Today is your first day at your new job. That uni degree wasn’t a waste of money after all.
After wandering around the labyrinthine seventh floor for what feels like forever, you finally find your desk. A bald man with a stripy sweater and a cheesy grin is leaning against your cubicle, seemingly awaiting your arrival.
“Oh hi there, you must be the new boy!” he says, offering his hand. “I’m Kevin, your line manager.”
You shake his hand. His grip is surprisingly strong. You try not to show any discomfort on your face.
“I’m sure you already know what you’re doing, but before you crack on, you need to watch the induction video.”
You sigh. Induction videos are a complete waste of time, you think to yourself.
Kevin laughs.
“I know, I know. It’s only a few minutes long though, so you’ll be fine!
You take a pair of headphones out of your desk drawer and prepare to watch the video.
After a few minutes, the video comes to an end. The part about the sub-basement levels piques your curiosity. You decide to find Kevin and see if he’ll tell you more. After more wandering, you find his office. Before you can knock, he beckons you in.
“Come in, come in.” he says, offering you a seat.
”I won’t stay, I just wanted to tell you I’ve watched the video.”
“Oh good, most new hires put it off for too long. “ he stands up. “Anyway, if there’s nothing else you need, I’-”
Before he can finish, you interrupt him.
“I was just wondering what they meant about the sub-basement levels.” you ask, trying not to sound too nosey.
Kevin’s smile disappears and is replaced with a cold, icy stare.
“Don’t worry about it.”
Before you can say anything else, he ushers you out.
That was odd. You decide to shrug it off and go back to your desk. It’s probably not an interesting story anyway.
